Logging into my ya.hoo email account this morning, I realized that I did it again! UGH!!! Over and over, I find myself repeating this process. Each time I get so mad at myself, yet in a few weeks, I’m right back in the same place. Enough is enough. We know the definition of insanity, don’t we folks? Of course we do! The very brainy Mr. Einstein told us that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, yet expecting different results.
Clearly, I’ve crossed the line into insanity. Well, no more. I’m done with it. As of 9:41 EST, I’ve changed the course. It was a tedious chore that took me about 20 minutes to complete. Now that it’s done? I feel like….like….like….like these guys!
I am hereby unsubscribed to ALL deal sites ala group.on, living so.cial, mam.apedia, plu.m district, saveo.logy, evers.ave, the daily de.al, kg.b deals, groo.p dealz, certi.fikids, doo.dle deals, bloom.spot, savem.ore, AND ALL THE OTHERS!!!!!
Seriously, my yah.oo box had turned into deal hell! At least 50 new messages a day, all with opportunities to separate me from my hard-earned pennies. And of course, soooooooo many of them were excellent deals. Y’all know I love a good deal. I’ve dined at some great places for half the cost, took the kidlet to cool places on the cheap, and truly made the most of the vouchers for places like ama.zon, e.bay and Whol.e Foods.
But, I’m also guilty of committing the worst kind of crime – letting the deals expire! NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO! Yup, I’m afraid it’s true. The thrill of victory upon acquiring the deal, has soured and turned to crap as I watch it expire. Who can really eat that many cupcakes? Why did I pick a spa that inconvenient to get to???? **Oh vey** The only halfway decent thing is that you don’t actually lose any money. If you read the fine print, your promotional value expires, but the actual dollar amount you spent to purchase remains yours to use at whatever the retailer is. **whining** But that’s NOT a deal. That’s just me spending $20 on sushi. I wanted my $40 value for the $20 I spent!!!
So, yep, I’m done. Finished!! I’m done with them all. Overreaction? Perhaps, much like throwing the baby out with the bath water. I’m ok with it though. I’ll miss the allure, but I know my wallet will thank me. Now I have to field all those puppy dogs eyes and softly worded emails about being missed. Oh, but, um, erra, if the really, really good ones come around again, you know, like ama.zon or Whol.e Foods, y’all better holla at cha girl, m’kay?
Are you subscribed to daily deal sites? How many? Do you purchase often? Do you use the ones you purchase? Have you ever left them expire?
I subscribe to both Groupon and Living Social. I’ve purchased some great deals (maybe once a month), and I use my Google calendar to remind me of the expiration dates, so I don’t lose out. I also try to avoid the temptation to buy more deals than I have time to use.
Of course, I do have a deal that expires February 1st. Every time we plan to go to the restaurant something goes wrong. I think I need to make that happen this weekend.
My vice used to be emailed coupons for my favorite stores. I ended up creating an agent that automatically sends messages from Land’s End, White House Black Market, Chico’s and all other clothing stores to a special folder called “Retail Offers”. I don’t have to be tempted and if I’m ever looking for a bathing suit for 40% off, I can still go in the folder and get the coupon. It’s saved me from many spontaneous purchases at work.
See, that’s why I never signed up for those sites! I’m a sucker for a good deal, too. But the psychology around coupons is that they prompt you to spend money (that most times you shouldn’t) on things you really don’t need. Hooray for you for stepping away from temptations! LOL
Those doggone sites get me everytime and it takes me a whole weekend to unsubscribe. I can’t do it anymore. On a totally unrelated note, I have the tshirt of the crew jumping up in the air. It’s my favorite shirt. LOL Anchorman is hilarious!
This post cracked me up! I am the worst with this. I had been saying for a while now that I needed to do the same thing. I was subscribed to at least 12 of those sites if not more. I have let mine expire and I have done the same thing as you and bought a deal for a manicure that’s like 45 min. away just because it was a “deal”.
So I took your lead today and I unsubscribed to all but 4 sites. LOL Baby steps for me.
LOL….you were on a roll there for a minute. I couldn’t keep up with you and all your deals. I understand; post-Christmas I promptly unsubscribed from ALL retail emails. I did however keep my Living Social subscription so I’ll err..um..keep all deals to myself ;-p
Ahhhh I can’t even count how many times I got a great deal on living social and groupon and LET THEM EXPIRE!!! I always want to kick myself! I’m trying not to look at groupon and living social this year. It’s hard. It’s like giving up an addiction…..
I subscribe to Groupon and Living Social, but I’ve also purchased dinner coupons from Yelp and Open Table. So far, I haven’t let anything expire. I have used something on the last day of eligibility. I suspect that my sister has let one of the coupons that I purchased as a gift to my nephew expire(paintball.) I don’t purchase that often, my budget doesn’t allow it. I also have to convince my friends to try something new.
I have been doing this since January 1, 2012.
I don’t read ’em.
I don’t need ’em.
WELCOME TO THE DARK SIDE!
I need to do the same thing lol.
I’m SO guilty. I started off the new year unsubscribing from a lot of them. I got in way too deep. All for a good deal! LOL!
I have both groupon and living social. I only purchase what I know I’m going to use and have NEVER let one expire. I have no problem walking away. Just cause it looks like a deal don’t make it so if you are just spending for spending sake. *Shrugs* I love it.
I subscribe to Living Social and Groupon. I purchased a mani/pedi once and used it. However, Hubby bought us a dance lesson through Living Social last January. It expires next month and we still haven’t used it!! I am tired of having loads of emails about sales or deals everyday, also. I’ve even unsubscribed from a few, but still get a ton!
i don’t sign up for any sites however, I always get the spam mail! I hate having to unsubscribe to stuff I never subscribed to begin with. It’s annoying as hell!
I don’t have any daily deal sites because not only do they send too many emails but I don’t have a job and I don’t need that kind of temptation in my life. I am such an email-a-holic and when I get too many messages, I freak out.
I’m only on Groupon and Living social thus far, so it’s not TOO bad. I am also guilty of letting an offer expire. *sigh* lol
I am on livingsocial.com and goldstar.com. I’ve only gotten two things from Goldstar in the two years I’ve been subscribed. I’ve never purchased anything from Living Social. I need to do what you did and just unsubscribe from them both. Not because I’m tempted to buy things I don’t need but because I’m sick of all the emails junking up my inbox.
I subscribe to tons and instead of taking the time to unsubscribe I just creat a new email address! I never buy them though. I have in the past but not frequently. I just don’t get it. I hate to spend money let alone spend it on something that I don’t get instant gratification from. Nawl…I just pay full price!
I have actually found some great deals on these sales sights: international travel, airplane flight lesson, soaring (as a gift), entertainment tickets, massages, etc. I am very cautious to make my purchase with a date, event or experience in mind. I do not accumulate just to have the “bargain”. That is when I forget what I got and why. It kinda defeats my saving.anthing.
Know what you did for me with this post? As I was checking my inbox that was filling up this morning and as I was working at individually reviewing each email, I unsubscribed!! instead of just deleting. I feel so much better. Thank you!
LOL! i subscribe too all of them but there are so many i don’t even have time to look through….it also helps im a little adhd…i move onto the next thing pretty fast! i should probably unsubsribe just they are not wasting their time
Living social and one of those kid deal sites are the only things I’m subbed to right now. I just bought a 3 hour knitting class, and our new year cards are coming from a deal I got last year (super late, I know). Hubs has a deal at a restaurant that’s expiring next month…I may just use it to take my sorority sisters out to lunch.
I really try not to subscribe to any of those sites, but if I do I use my alternative email address. Yes, I am guilty I have a few email addresses. lol
Good for you for walking away from temptation!
I am so guilty. Its so bad that when groupon emails me that deals are expiring, im like huh? whatchu talking bout groupon? ohhh thatttt thing I bought when I thought i’d be able to cash in… smh!
im only subscribed to groupon but they are getting craftier with their offers, must…resist…
I am sooooo right there with you. It’s terrible! You don’t even really save money because you end up spending money you wouldn’t have had you not seen the darn “deal” you’re buying. Sigh.
I stumbled upon your site and absolutely love the way you speak your mind. I can relate to you so much. I had a question about your easy crock-pot meal you posted in the blog before this one. How long do you cook it once you have all the ingredients in? Thank you!
LMAO at all those sites LOL.. I’m just as bad but mine are mostly fitness related. I absolutely love gearbuzz and schwaggle.. I get bomb workout gear & essentials LOL I don’t hesitate to delete.. only had one groupon expire on me an well I was preggars and the good ole folks didnt want to give me an extension so I had to lose out… it’s cool I know I will never buy from them again
Hilarious. Same here. I’ve subscribed to receive certain notifications from different sites because it seemed like a good idea at the time. But sorting through mad emails from two different addresses is not the business.
As you now know…
